Katherine

The Neurodiversity Mom

Katherine L’Etang is a late diagnosed Autistic & ADHD content creator who lives in  Ontario, Canada, with her husband and two kids. Katherine has a bachelor’s degree in  Sociology as well as a post-graduate degree in Elementary Education.

After her son’s Autism diagnosis, Katherine and her family embarked on a typical  autism journey. They sought out intensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy  for him when it was recommended, even though it didn’t feel right at the time. She wondered to herself whether it was more disruptive than helpful. Only when her son started having increasingly intense meltdowns after ABA did she finally start listening  to her gut and ventured out on a mission to understand and accommodate his brain.  Throughout the years, her child’s high masking autism presentation meant that she was often questioned about his diagnosis and whether he was “actually autistic.” Later on,  Katherine and her husband began to notice autistic traits in their daughter too, though  she is more unmasked, and lives her life as a bubbly and outgoing sensory seeker who  is fiercely independent. Being able to support two children with vastly different needs  has given Katherine a wealth of practical education in neurodivergence in addition to  her formal education as a teacher.

Through supporting her children, Katherine began to question her own neurotype. Throughout her school years she felt left behind and like she didn’t quite fit in, despite  appearing to have a very typical childhood. Like many autistic women, Katherine’s  educational pursuits illustrates her desire to better understand the world around her and help other kids who experienced the world how she did. The feeling of difference  persisted throughout her university career despite being in the top of her class and later fulfilling typical norms like working in a sought-after corporate job and being a wife  and a mother. She was finally diagnosed with Autism and ADHD as an adult after  seeing various aspects of herself in her children and relating to autistic women on social  media (as well as experiencing a lifetime of burnout cycles).

Katherine has made it her mission to provide community, inclusion, and acceptance on  both a micro and macro scale, empowering parents to value and rely on their natural  parenting instincts plus promote self-acceptance and celebration of our autistic identities.
